Synchronization tends to be tedious and time consuming for users

This patent application details Apple’s plan for wireless syncing for iPods. Wireless syncing as described in this patent is pretty much the same process as syncing using USB or firewire - except wireless.

The patent suggests 802.11 (wifi) as the protocol suggested for the wireless connection (and there is no mention of Bluetooth- presumably because it would be too slow). iPod-to-iPod syncing is also covered as a possible application .

The wireless component is not necesarily integral to the iPod and may be provided by a docking station, an add-on portable device, a backpack, briefcase, bag or case- or even wireless built into a car. How you build a wireless dock into a backpack is a bit beyond me…

The system would use the fastest available connection- it would switch between wired and wireless when the connection became available. The datedness of this patent application is hi-lighted by its references to iTunes 2.0.
