New Apple Dynamic OLED Keyboard

hrmpf on January 3rd, 2008

keyboard1.pngAn Apple patent has recently surfaced for a dynamically changeable OLED keyboard similar to the Optimus. The keyboard would rely on OLEDs to provide the graphics on the key surfaces. The patent application also details how such a keyboard would be manufactured. The current cost for the optimus keyboard is USD$462 so Apple would have severely reduce manufacturing costs to include such a keyboard in an upcoming product.

Details:
Broadly speaking, the present invention provides methods and apparatus for dynamically altering the key faces of keyboard keys, such that they show an accurate representation of what action will occur when a particular key is depressed. In one embodiment the altering key faces are accomplished by placing a number of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) on each key face, and using an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) placed inside each key to turn on and turn off the respective diodes. The respective ASICs are controlled by signals originating from the software application in which the user is currently working and by the selected language locale. As a result, the users always have current and accurate information in front of them about what will happen when a particular key is depressed on the keyboard, and there is no need to memorize what actions particular key depressions will cause.

DYNAMICALLY CONTROLLED KEYBOARD

Title:DYNAMICALLY CONTROLLED KEYBOARD
Inventors: Smith and Reid
Number: 20080001787

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implementing and using techniques for providing a computer peripheral including one or more keys. Each key has several light emitting diodes disposed on a face of the key. Each of the light emitting diodes can switch on or off in response to a data signal received from an application specific integrated circuit dedicated to the key. A corresponding key and manufacturing method, as well as a computer system including one or more such keys are also described.

Finally: An easy way to flip between the old-and-busted QWERTY and the much faster, not-so-new hotness DVORAK.

Bring it, Apple!

USD$462 is the price for an Optimus keyboard with a single OLED key. It’ll cost you USD$1564 for the whole shebang (all 113 keys). In the middle is USD$600 for 10 OLED keys and USD$1000 for 47 OLED keys.

I think Apple wont be using this anytime until the tech becomes more affordable

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Apple to use the multi-touch technology they already have in the iPhone to have a flat blank panel that gets illuminated with keys and touch pad.

Where does it say Oled? It doesnt. I see Light Emitting Diode, but mention of Oled. LED’s are far cheaper.

OLED is thinner, more power efficient and brighter. why they want to use LED. think it right, dude.

[…] Cupertinosta on haettu tietojen mukaan patenttia myös kulloisenkin käyttötarkoituksen mukaan muuntuvalle OLED-näppäimistölle. Ajatus mukailisi jo kehitettyä Optimus-näppäimistöä, jonka painikkeissa on pikkuruinen näyttö, jossa kuvataan näppäimen kulloistakin toimintoa. OLED-näytön (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) toiminta perustuu orgaaniseen aineeseen, jonka perusperiaate on samanlainen kuin diodilla eli se tuottaa valoa, kun siihen ohjataan sähkövirtaa. I don’t see why anyone is surprised that apple is blatantly ripping off another cool idea. Apple has not had one original idea. Everything including their ipod which is where most of money is from was stolen or bought from someone else for a fraction of what it is worth.
