I figured out the problem with window capture, now it captures a 70 pixel shadow along with the window. There are a couple of ps actions and applescripts that will get rid of this, what a pain!

I used to use cmd shift 4 spacebar in tiger to capture the window (think I held down ctrl as well), but when I do it in leopard, then make a new file in photoshop, now the file is larger than the window, and it fills the empty space with black, which is the foreground color!? I've been doing this for production for quite a while, so I'm pretty surprised by this. Any ideas what might be giving me a bigger window?

The timed capture feature of Grab can come in handy in occasions where pressing the screenshot key combination would dismiss or change what you're trying to get a screen grab of. I've used it most often for bug reports about screen corruption (and once to get around a lame form of copy protection). It's extremely awkward to use, but indispensable when I do need it.

Thanks, couple of great tips in there. Especially the dock and menus were a problem for me. I am using the beta of Skitch (by Comic Life's Plasq), which has a couple of features that make it very elegant, but I may want to give Screen capture a try again.

Preview also has a Grab menu command that lets you capture the Dock and menus with timed captures. The snap opens as a tiff in Preview.

I never heard about the icon trick before!

The "bigger than your screen" thing only seems to work when wider than your screen, not taller, since, unlike Windows, Mac won't let your move a window up and under the menu bar (normally a good thing, but unfortunate in this case).

> weirdly only works on the desktop

It only works on the desktop because the Finder uses individual windows for the desktop icons.

Also, holding the Control key down while taking a screenshot copies the image to the clipboard, rather than to a file on the Desktop.
