Another thought might be to use an infrared device to precisely heat the display surface for home row keys, or use some other technology to cool the home row keys. There's more than one way to accomplish tactile feedback ;-).

Correction, I meant to say that the idea would be to vibrate the key locations for which the computer did not think your fingers were properly upon. An enhancement to assist might be to also vibrate the F & H keys so you could get your index fingers properly positioned (which should help align all other fingers).

Here's an alternative concept that maybe someone at Mac will see--how about using vibration to help touch typists know if they have properly centered their fingers on the virtual keyboard. The idea would be to vibrate the keys which the computer thought your fingers were properly centered upon. I'd think this would be one way to offer tactile feedback without damaging the surface through repetitive mechanical action.

[...] Attempts to change the venerable keyboard are usually met with failure - despite promising claims of productivity benefits, there’s often too great a pay-off for users used to the traditional QWERTY ‘board - but if anyone can encourage us to upgrade, perhaps it’s Apple. Their latest patent describes a MultiTouch surface particularly suitable for a MacBook (or a Mac Tablet, maybe?) which, thanks to a lifting framework of key-edges that presses underneath, can be both a smooth touchpad or a delineated keyboard.
