"Firefox’simplementation of find-as-you-type is still the best"

I disagree. The Opera browser's implementation is superior to everything else I've seen. Press . to search for anything, or press , to search for links only. In the newest technical preview (http://snapshot.opera.com/) the current highlighted text will have a yellow background color, and all the other matches will have a green background. Press cmd+g/ctrl+g to jump to the next match.

So to navigate around on page, I'd simply press , and start typing some text - let's say "apple art" - and the menu item Apple Articles will be highlighted. And by pressing the enter/return button, I'm taken there. Simple, elegant and very, very powerful.
