I agree with Tempus and SMACK, mostly because I have a toothbrush that charges swimmingly with no wires. Admittedly there are male and female components which presumably makes it more straight forward to create an effective electromagnetic field. Still any ideas on when we're going to see something for a laptop?

[...] We found a very well done image (above right) and some interesting hypotheses at Macpredictions.com on a MacBook Air - including Power-by induction - which Apple patented a year ago. Since then, many more images have shown up across the internet. Macpredictions was certainly the fastest and one of the most professional looking. He is in London and unconnected to Apple.
[...] The new machine was also said to include a large multi-function new trackpad which was described in a recent Apple patent as “…having the capabilities of conventional computer mouse devices, such as the ability to point, drag, tap and double tap objects on a graphical user interface, as well as more general purposes such as scrolling, panning, zooming, and rotating images on display screen.” Another recent patent suggests the possibility of collapsable external ports. Rounding out the outlandish claims there is yet another patent pointing to Apple’s desire to use induction to power its future devices. Yep that’s A/C over the airwaves if you’re not paying attention. [...]

I agree with Tempus - using a magnetic field to charge items in this way is not new - if you have an electric toothbrush you will know this. Combining it with data transfer is cool but again nothing new.

Patenting this is a bit like slapping a patent on a deck chair - might seem like a great idea but they will never truly own this; there are more ways to skin une chat.
